Start with a letter

Choose an alphabet and how many letters you want.

How it works

  1. Choose uppercase or lowercase English letters, vowels, consonants, or a custom set of visible characters.
  2. Set the number of letters. Turn on different letters to use each allowed character at most once per generation.
  3. Generate, copy or export. For several characters joined into a value, open Random strings.

Every allowed character has a chance

Characters are selected uniformly from your chosen alphabet using browser cryptographic randomness. Vowels are A, E, I, O and U; the consonant preset includes Y. Repeated characters in a custom alphabet are counted only once, so duplicates do not add weight.

Your inputs stay with you

Your entries, settings and results are processed in this browser and are not sent to our server. Clearing browser data removes saved drafts and results. Export a text file if you want to keep a copy. Hosting may record standard page-request logs.

What can I use a random letter for?

Pick the starting letter for a word game or use several letters as a writing constraint. Different letters can only produce as many results as there are distinct allowed characters. Custom alphabets currently support visible ASCII characters without spaces.
